In adherence to the Supreme Court's guidelines, the West Bengal Health Department has issued a seven-point guideline to ensure the protection of Good Samaritans rescuing accident victims. The directive, sent to various hospital authorities, emphasizes the hanging of instructions outside the premises.
According to the guidelines, helpers transporting injured individuals to government or private hospitals must not be detained, and they should be released after providing their name and address voluntarily. Individuals refusing to share information cannot be compelled, and no civil or criminal action can be taken against them. If someone reports an accident or an injured person without revealing their identity over the phone, the police cannot force them to disclose personal information.
To encourage prompt assistance without fear of harassment, the injured person's consent is required to include the rescuer's name in a police report. The guidelines aim to bridge the implementation gap and raise awareness at the ground level, fostering a safe environment for those rendering aid in emergency situations.
